Dell working on Android smartphoneDredging up memories of flopped rumors from days gone by, Michael Dell, the founder of the computer manufacturer that bears his namesake, has hinted at the possibility that Dell is entering the handset business. More specifically, Dell could be poised to take a swing at the smartphone segment that fellow computer-maker Apple has so successfully tapped.

In response to an interview question recently posed by GigaOm’s Om Malik, in regards to whether Dell would be working Android or Symbian, Dell said his company “is kind of working on that.” Read the rest of this entry »

HTC Touch Diamond US 3G Well that sure took a while. As the rest of the world had the honor of being part of HTC’s launch markets for the up and coming HTC Touch Diamond, the US has had to wait for HTC to push their US-spec HTC Touch Diamond through the FCC. The HTC Touch Diamond already passed FCC tests in Euro-trim, but this latest approval gives the US-spec Diamond a thumbs-up for US duty.

Sure, devoted ROM cooks were able to give the Euro-spec HTC Touch Diamond some 850Mhz frequency capability. And then HTC came out with their own ROM update that gave the HTC Touch Diamond EDGE-support on the 850Mhz band. But, without a dedicated 850/1900Mhz 3G radio under the hood, the HTC Touch Diamond just couldn’t crack the US market like we’d hoped. Read the rest of this entry »

Swf2Jar

Remember Sony Ericsson’s Project Capuchin which we covered back in May? Basically, the Swedish-Japanese handset maker developed a Java ME API that defines a bridge between the Java ME and Adobe Flash Lite programming environments, making it possible to use Flash Lite tools while still having access to all phone services through Java ME. Now they’ve come up with a concrete tool called Swf2Jar. Here’s what it does:

The Swf2Jar 1.0 tool automatically packages together a jar containing a Java MIDlet class and a Flash file (.swf). The simplest Project Capuchin application is to package existing Flash Lite content in a MIDlet jar file which applies Java security, distribution methods and installation.

LG KP265Music-enabled mobile phones are selling like crazy these days. LG knows that and it keeps pushing new music phones to the marketplace. We’ve just caught the new model Korean giant is launching in Russia – KP265.

The LG KP265 is a basic phone with pre-installed music player. The active-lifestyle-looking slider sports a 1.3 megapixel camera, 262K color TFT screen, and a microSD slot. And that’s it – there’s nothing special about the phone, aside from the music playback capabilities. I would expect to see Russia’s MTS selling the KP265 starting from free on a contract…

Amosu Ultimo Diamond iPHoneAnd it’s not even an iPhone 3G! The connoisseurs of tacky and the kings of gaudy at Amosu figured the uber-rich don’t pay much attention to the latest technology to hit the mobile phone market. They’ve crafted the Amosu Ultimo Diamond, sporting 1,179 diamonds weighing in at a whopping 16.18 karats.

The result – the world’s most expensive iPhone, not the world’s most expensive iPhone 3G. This ridiculously ugly $177,300 Amosu Ultimo Diamond is a first-generation iPhone covered in soo many diamonds that each and every one of these custom handsets are likely tied to some sort of blood-diamond conflict.
